Hello I have been researching the Gray Family and I was looking to contact with any members of this family to share and confirm some information. George and possibly his father Cyrus Gray. Sorry the message is so long but I wanted to include most of my information in hopes of making a connection. I have information that George Gray is the father of my Great - Great Grandfather James Monroe Gray. James indicated on his Civil War papers that he was born in Steuben County, Indiana. James’s tombstone and obituary list 1839 as his birth year. James’s three older sisters all indicate Ohio as their state of birth, and four of his sister’s Mary Ann, Jeanette Editha, Phebe G. and Deborah were all married in Steuben County, Indiana. James’s oldest sister Mary Ann probably died before 1850, thus I can’t verify her state of birth, however it is logical to assume it is Ohio. -- George Gray on March 15, 1837, bought 120 acres in Steuben County in Section 28, Township 38 N, Range 12 E. George Gray was listed as living in Geauga County, Ohio -- George Gray then bought 40 acres on March 20 1837 in Section 33 township 38 N, Range 12 E. George was listed of LaGrange County, Indiana, a neighboring county of Steuben. -- George Gray then bought 40 acres on August 20, 1838 in Section 28 township 38 N, Range 12 E George was listed of Steuben County. George Gray’s first purchase listed him as living in Geauga County, Ohio in early 1837. This confirms the fact that James Gray’s sisters were born in Ohio. George’s last land purchase in 1838 listing him living in Steuben County this confirms that George was living in Steuben County when James was born in 1839 confirming James statement that he was born in Steuben County, Indiana on his civil war papers. There were other Gray’s that bought land in Steuben County, Indiana. They were as follows : Cyrus Gray of Lagrange County, Indiana bought 80 acres In the exact same area that George bought land on March 30, 1837, 5 days after George bought Cyrus Gray of LaGrange County, Indiana bought 80 acres in the exact same area that George bought land on the same day. Cyrus bought land in section 28, George in section 33. Abraham Gray of Steuben County, Indiana bought 80 acres the same day as George Gray on August 20, 1838 Abraham bought in section 27, George bought Section 28. A Old Settlers list in Mill Grove Township, Steuben County Indiana prior to 1840 contains. Abraham GRAY wife, 5 kids 1836 Ohio Cyrus GRAY 1836 Ohio George GRAY wife, 3 kids 1836 Ohio (should have had more kids according to my calculations at least 4) The 1840 Census of Mill Grove Township, Steuben County, Indiana lists the following Gray family. 1 Male under 5 James Monroe Gray -- (born 1835 - 1840) 1 Male 10 - 15 (don't know) -- (born 1825 - 1830) 1 Male 15 - 20 (don't Know) -- (born 1820 - 1825) 1 Male 40 - 50 George Gray -- (born 1790 - 1800) 2 Female 5 - 10 -- Phebe and Deborah Gray -- (born 1830 - 1835) 1 Female 10 - 15 -- Jeanette Editha Gray -- (born 1825 - 1830) 1 Female 15 - 20 -- Mary Ann Gray -- (born 1820 - 1825) 1 Female 30 -40 -- Hannah Gray -- (born 1800 - 1810) ** All of this information matches up correctly with the actual dates of birth for the children ** With George Gray dieing around 1843 I looked for his wife Hannah in 1850. Hannah was found as Hannah Kinney age 48 and born in New York. Hannah evidently remarried to John Kinney, also living with her was Deborah Gray, her daughter that she had with George. By 1850 all of the other daughters had married and Deborah was 16, listed as born in Ohio. They were living in the neighboring county of LaGrange in East Lima Township. The Gray’s while in Steuben County were living in a township that bordered LaGrange County. Also living in East Lima Twp. Lagrange County, Indiana was a Munral GREY age 15 born in Indiana. He was living with a family named Samuel Parker. Samuel was listed as insane, but was married with children ages 23, 22, 18, 23, 16, and Munral Grey age 15. Three of the Parker children were females. It is very possible that this is James MONROE GRAY and the census taker misspelled MONROE as MUNRAL and GRAY as GREY. The age of 15 is wrong he should have been listed as 11 or 12, but as is proven ages on census’s are sometimes not accurate. James may have been “farmed” out to help the Parker family as the father was insane. Also living in LaGrange County, Indiana was Hannah's daughter Jeanette (Gray) Bennett. She married Columbus Bennett in 1849. The only daughter unaccounted for is Phebe Gray who married in 1855 and would have been about 19 years old in the 1850 census. With the fact that George was living in Geauga County, Ohio when buying land in Steuben County, Indiana, I checked the census in 1830 for his family. Carlton Cemetery west of Angola on Highway 120 before Orlandin Steuben county has several Grays buried there Cyrus Ward and brothers George and Abram are also buried there. I have not been there and I am looking to get a actual reading with dates. In 1830 George Gray was in Claridon Township, Geauga County, Ohio as follows 1 Male under 5 (don't know) 1 Male 30 - 40 George Gray born between 1790 and 1800 1 Female under 5 Jeanette Editha Gray born 1825 - 1830 1 Female 5 - 10 Mary Ann Gray born between 1820 - 1825 1 Female 20 - 30 Hannah Gray born between 1800 - 1810 Also on the same page on the census is the following names. They are all possibly related to George’s wife Hannah as she may have been Hannah Bosly and her mother’s maiden name may have been Ames. Mosier Ames John P. Bosly Shadrach Bosly Daniel Ames I suspect that Cyrus Gray is the father of George and that Abraham Gray is George’s brother. I checked the 1840 census and found Cyrus Gray’s family as follows 1840 Census Mill Grove Township, Steuben County, Indiana Cyrus Gray Family. 1 Male 70- 80 ( born between Cyrus 1760 - 1770) 1 Male 20 - 30 1 Male 5 - 10 1 Female 60 - 70 ( Wife born between 1770 - 1780) It is believed that Cyrus Gray died between 1840 and 1850. In 1850 a Mary Gray age 75 that was born in Virginia is living with John Barnard age 39 and Rachel Barnard age 34 in Mill Grove Twp. This Mary Gray was born about 1775 and the age matches the lady in the 1840 Cyrus Gray family. On top of that In the Indiana marriage records Rachel A. Gray married John Barnard March 24, 1840 in Steuben County, Indiana. Ashtabula County, Ohio is a neighboring County of Geauga, Ohio. I found a C. Gray on the 1830 census in Windsor Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. This C. Gray matches up with Cyrus Gray as far as ages go. 1 Male 15 - 20 -- born 1810 - 1815 1 Male 50 - 60 -- born 1770 - 1780 1 Female 15 - 20 -- born 1810 - 1815 1 Female 50 - 60 -- born 1770 - 1780 In 1820 I found Cyrus Gray still in Windsor Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. 1 male under 10 -- born 1810 - 1820 1 male 16 - 26 -- born 1794 - 1804 possibly George Gray? 1 male 45 and up -- born 1775 or before 1 female 0 - 10 -- born 1810 - 1820 2 female 10 -16 -- born 1804 - 1810 1 female 45 and up -- born 1775 or before It is believed that Cyrus and his wife had some daughters: -- Rebecca Gray born 1807 in PA married a Alexander Ward then Samuel Pierson. She was alive in 1880 age 73 in Steuben County. Listed her birth as PA mom and dad both PA. -- Mary Gray was born in Winchester, Virginia. Her father having early imbibed a hatred for slavery and the surrounding atmosphere not being congenial to his tastes immigrated to northern Ohio where Mary the daughter was married to Walter in March 1820. Mary’s son was CYRUS GRAY LUCE and was born in Windsor Ashtabula County, Ohio on July 2 1824 . Cyrus Gray Luce was the second child of six boys...................... the family moved to Steuben county Indiana in September 1836. The similarities of Mary Gray strike me -- A son named Cyrus Gray, you would think that it is named after her father. - She was born in Virginia, was George her possible brother also born there? Phebe in 1900 listed her father George’s birth as VA , in 1880 and 1910 she said PA, Rebecca, George’s possible sister listed PA as the birth state of her father. - Deborah George’s other daughter in 1880 and 1900 listed her father George Gray as being born in VA -- James Monroe Gray did not know where his father was born on the 1880 and 1900 census, though not his fault as George died when James was under 10 years of age. Sorry so long hope to hear from someone Craig Campbell Notify Administrator about this message?
