Tom Greatorex was my great-great grandfather. Here's what I was told about him by my grandmother. He was born in Derbyshire, England in 1857 and was married to Alice Gray (also born in Derbyshire). They had two children, William ( 4/21/1884 - 9/6/1960) and Eleanor (1882?-1891). In 1891, Eleanor (age about 9) leaned too close to a candle in a window and her nightgown caught on fire. Her mother, who was pregnant, rushed down the stairs to get help, tripped and fell. Eleanor, Alice and the unborn child all died. In 1894 Tom took his son William and William's grandmother (I assume Tom's mother, but I'm not sure) and sailed to the US. William celebrated his 10th birthday on the ship. I hadn't heard Tom met his second wife on the ship, but that's certainly possible. Her name was Emily Raleigh, and they had 3 sons, (Tom, Albert, and Frank.) William (my great grandfather) later took over the pork store from Tom. He married Elizabeth Alice Crook, whose parents were from Lancashire, England), and they had 2 daughters, my grandmother Olive Rosine Marion Greatorex (1910-2006), and her sister Muriel Alberta Greatorex (b. 1916). (My grandmother married Walter John Tomlinson Jr. in 1933 and they had 2 sons -- my father W J Tomlinson III and my uncle William Greatorex Tomlinson. This past November at my grandmother's funeral we met her cousin, Frank Greatorex, who lives in Leonardo, NJ and has been working on some family genealogy, so he may have more info. I went on line looking for information because my son has a school project to write about an ancestor. It was exciting to see that someone else out there is also looking -- if you find anythin interesting, please let me know.
