Hi there - I'm posting a follow up on this message from a few years back - my mum is Val Wood and we are still stuck in the same place since this was posted!!
We have had a new kickstart on the research and wondered if anyone has any knowledge of when a Greatrex married an Alsop pre 1600 (we have found John Greatrex alias Alsop living in Newborough in 1605 as his daughter was christened and several other children).
We have also found the marriage of an Edward Greatrex alias Alsop in 1625 in Newborough, and then a will of Edward Greatrex alias Alsop in Newborough 1649 who refers to a John Alsop of Sudbury!
There is also Francis Greatrex alias Alsop in Stowe, by way of his children's baptisms from 1620's.
Are these all brothers or cousins? Where does Alsop come from? I too have noticed that there are other names with alias Alsop in them, like John Jenkinson alias Alsop in 1625, Roger Splendlove alias Alsop in 1618 etc. Was this common and is it them just keeping the name Alsop going if it is someone's maiden name before marrying a Greatrex???
Any help would be most appreciated!!
Val and Alison.
