I'd agree with Paul. We must remember that consistent spelling is quite a modern development, even for common words, and error are still made (eg center for centre, tire for tyre ;-)) Add to this the poor literacy of the masses and the fact that Greatorex is not an easy name to spell and it's not surprising there are many variants!
