Greatrex alias Alsop

Can anyone please help? I have researched my Greatrex family back to 1640 when the family were living in Sudbury, Derbyshire. However, I was searching through the Vernon Land books at Matlock Records Office when I was horrified to come across a John Greatrex alias Alsop in 1640. I am puzzled as to how the name Alsop has come about. This John Greatrex alias Alsop married a lady named Thomasin I believe, they had three sons a William Greatrex who married Mary, Edward Greatrex married Dorothy and a John Greatrex who married Elizabeth. The family lived in Sudbury until my g.g.g.g.g.grandparents Thomas and Margaret nee Bostock moved to Llangenni, South Wales around 1760's. However, my research has come to an abrupt halt on discovering the Greatrex alias Alsop and I am not able to get back any further. I do hope someone may be able to help me solve this mystery.
