Mardale and Bampton families
Hi,
We have briefly looked into the Mardale/Bampton families but again no one has ever come forward to say they are researching.
Just for a bit of background. The farms in Mardale (Riggindale etc ) were all flooded in the early part of the 20th century as part of a reservoir to serve Manchester. The tiny church also is under the water. We were lucky a few years ago to see the remains of the church, the old pack-horse bridge and the farms of Riggindale and Goosemire during a severe drought. A sad sight walking amongst the old roads and farms! The remains from the graves as far as we know were all reinterred in Shap cemetery.
We met a Greenhow from Gt Asby many yrs ago who thought he was descended from the Mardale lot but no further info was provided. The resemblance of him to my husbands late father was uncanny and there was the history of twins in the family too which keeps popping up.
The Greenhow researchers seem thin on the ground. If ours is anything to go by, the family on the male side is dying out. Sorry to be so gloomy, but we'd love to hear from anyone too researching in Cumberland and Westmoreland.
Good Hunting, Margaret
