Hi Jim,
Noticed your postings requesting source of information for John Greenlaw and Elizabeth Thomson being parents of William Greenlaw of Warren & Deer Isle, ME. I corresponded with Fran Bennett of the Greenlaw web page regarding this theory prior to her death. Her comment, quoted from a letter:
"....it's very exciting but I'm wondering what the basis was for selecting John and Elizabeth Thomson for William's parents.John Greenlaw and Elizabeth Thomson (also shown as Elspeth Thomsone in one record) were married in Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland 19 Aug. 1709.They had children (all christening dates and all christened at Liberton:
Elspeth, 18 Jun. 1710
William, 14 Mar. 1712
Robert, 21 May 1714
Hellen, 13 Jan. 1717
Margaret, 8 Jul 1719
James, 4 Mar. 1722
Elspeth, 30 Mar. 1725
John, 8 Jun. 1728
Janet, 18 Jan. 1731
To date, I have found no record of a marriage between a William Greenlaw or any of its variations and a Jane, Jean, or Janet for the right time period in the Old Parish Registers. The same is true of the christenings or births of their children." [end of quote]
Summarizing....Fran went on to say she had searched, but had not located a probate record or any other supporting data to "prove" that William Greenlaw of Warren/Deer Isle, ME was the Liberton, Scotland William listed in the above christening record...other than "same name." Fran hoped that someone would come forth with that proof.
I think the jury is out on this one, Jim. Let me know if you resolve this.
Justine
