My name is Andrew greenough and I was born in Leigh Lancashire 0n 5th jan 1955
My great grandfather (William I think) came to Howe Bridge, Atherton from Parr (St helens) to sink the colliery shafts for Gib Field Colliery in the late 19th Century... a very technical job
His son (another William) was the colliery engineer, and was awarded a medal for his valour in the Pretoria Colliery Disaster (circa 1910) when he was in the first cage lowered down into the colliery after an explosion.......about 600 dead I believe
My father james was born St Patricks day 1916 ( I think) and was an amateur footballer ....he must have been quite good as Bolton Wanderers offered to take him on when they were top of division 1 but his father wouldn't let him go...
He joined the RAF on the second day of the war having been told on the first day he was in a reserved occupation, so he lied on the second day.....
He joined Eagle Squadron where they had Sopworth Camels until their spitfires arrived !!!
After the war he trained as a teacher and was headmaster at Chowbent Unitarian Chapel Atherton.......he died in a fire at home 1978
I have abrother James born 1949 who is a dentist on the Isle of Man
