Hi, Kathy

I could not ascertain whether he was in the navy or a captain on a mercantile type of ship. Next time I am out to our local university I will try to backtrack on this.

I will give you the following: History of Newburyport, p. 121, William Greenough was the Right Worshipful William Greenough, master to St Peter's Lodge in Newburyport and was intending to celebrate the Feast of St. John the Evangalist on the 27th of December (1776)at the Merrimack Coffee House in Newbury (from The history and present state of the town of Newburyport by Cushing Caleb is the following: St. Peter's Lodge was chartered under General Warren, the Provincial Grand Master of this Mason's Lodge. William Greenough was one of the Masters.

I wonder why he went to Rumney - it is inland and not very big. Something drew him there.

I never thought of looking up General Warren - maybe give him a whirl. Most of my info comes from visits to the Univ. of British Columbia library which has a large American collection (thank heavens!) Anyway, this family has a very interesting background - being descendants of the Symonds,Reades. Doles, etc. Somewhere among my heaps of genealogical info. I have something about the Reade family - very well educated. They are kin to the Harlakenden family as well. It seems to me that I have something from the ?Essex? Antiquarian.

Next time I am U.B.C. I will try to backtrack on this issue.

Cheers,

(T.)Maureen Hyde
