The 1790 census enumeration for Benjamin Greentree included
himself as head, James C., and the following females: his wife, Mary Cash Greentree; and daughters Mary, Eleanor and
Margaret. This is the only record I have linking her to
Benjamin; unfortunately, the census in 1790 did not list
names. The other Greentrees contemporary with Benjamin were
his cousins, Alexander, Matthew and Robert. Alexander had a
daughter, Mary, who is accounted in census records in 1800,
1840, 1850, and 1851, and a marriage record in 1804. Matthew
had a daughter born about 1775, and i would venture that her
name was Mary. The younger 2 children enumerated with him
in the 1790 census were the children by his second wife's
first marriage (Susannah Kinnemont Hartley). His daughter
was enumerated with him and Sussannah in the 1800 Delaware
Census. Robert was in Tennessee, probably before 1787; Georgia Vallejos presented some records for Robert in her
posting in these message boards, but the records I have for
him place him in Md during the 1770's and Tn during the
early 1790's. I could not locate his land grant, and records began in 1787, so he was probably in Tn earlier than
1787; therfore, I would rule him out as the father of Mary.
The other brother, Isaac, was an express courier from eastern shore counties to the Philadelphia convention in 1776, and the last record of him was in 1777 where he was
paid money owed by an estate. He apparently died during
the war; so that rules him out as Mary's father. The most
convincing evidence that Benjamin was her father comes from
the names of her middle children: Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret
and Benjamin. I hope this information is useful.
