Many people have erroneously made the assumption that Joseph Greenway, son of George Greenway and Dinah Kelly of Montgomery Co., Va. is the same Joseph Greenway who appears to be the progenitor of many of the NC Greenways. This is not correct!
Joseph Greenway, above, was one of seven children of George and Dinah Kelly Greenway. The family included George, Joseph, Sarah (who never married), Nancy, Richard, Elijah, and Nathan.
Joseph married at least twice. His first wife is unknown, but her maiden name MAY have been MOORE. He had one son, Nathan, by this union. His wife apparently died shortly after Nathan (my ancestor) was born.
In 1822, Joseph married Polly Lakeland. She was very young (about 14) and he was probably close to 50. Joseph's father, George, was Polly's legal guardian and consented to the marriage. Joseph and Polly may have had at least three children, Louisa, Walker, and John, but attempts to verify this have not been successful.
I've found several websites where NC Greenways have tied into this Joseph but it simply isn't so.
