I am going to post some of my notes on my Robert Griffing, born 1776, who married Elizabeth Shaw in Jefferson Co. MS in 1807 in hopes that someone might have additional information to share. I have found that GRIFFING and GRIFFIN are interchanged within the same document or the even the Bible record.

Passport of Southeaster Pioneers 1770-1823 by Dorothy W. Potter, reprinted , Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 2001.
pg. 180
GA Executive Proceedings
"Executive Dept.
Wednesday, 10th March , 1802
ORDERED that a pass port through the cherokee nation to the western territory be prepared for Thomas Waggonner, Robert Barrehill, and Robert Griffin with their families,
which was presented and signed."
-------------------------
There is a Thomas Waggonner in Wilkinson in 1805 and Amite and Wilkinson in 1810 and Amite by 1820. The same for Robert Berryhill. In the 1820 Amite census Thomas Waggonner is living next to the "estate of Robert Griffin." No. of white poles - 1, no. of males - 2, no. of females - 4
-----------------
A Robert Griffin was in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co. with 1 white male age 21 or above, 3 white males under 21, 1 white female 21 or above, and 1 white female under 21. This could be the father of Robert Griffing since my Robert married Elizabeth Shaw in 1807, or even my Robert with children from an earlier marriage. There are two "extra" children here, a male and a female under 21 which would not be Elizabeth's children.

The last record of Robert Griffing that I find in census records is the 1845 MS state census which lists him as living in Jefferson Co.

In Amite Co. in 1810 there was another Robert Griffin who had 1 white male 21 or above, 1 white male under 21, 1 white female under 21.

In Wilkinson Co. Book A, page 222- Robert Griffin/ Jane Robinson applied for bond, bondsman Benjamin Stevens on 8 July 1808. Page 231 marriage record 12 July 1808 . James Robinson gave permission for her to marry.

Also a Robert Griffin was doing surveying in Wilkinson Co. in 1804 for land claims . On March 29, 1804 in McBee's Natchez Court Records, # 1517 unrecorded land claims- Claimant Robert Griffin, witness Fanny(Furney?) Griffin, 28 Nov. 1804. Cert. D-174, issued 24 Dec. 1806, MS terr. Claiborne Co. Robert Griffin claimed 320 a. on and adjoining the MS swamp about 5 miles below the Walnut Hills (Vicksburg) by improvement made previous to and on 3 Mar. 1803 by said Griffin.

On 1840/11/10 Robert Griffing bought 165 a. of land in Washington Land Office.
Sec 9, township 9 north, range 4 east. The same day Benjamin F. Griffing bought 79 a. , Sec 2 of the same township and range. This is most likely father and son of my family.

Robert Griffing/Griffin married Elizabeth Shaw in Jefferson Co. MS Mar.4, 1807 in Jefferson Co.
MS.(The name, Griffin or Griffing, even in court documents, is interchanged.)
The Bible record includes the following:

Susannah H. Griffing July 9, 1826
John F. Brown Sept. 15,1815-Sept. 3, 1844
Part of the pages are missing, and the only marriage that is recorded is Susanah Griffing to John F.
Brown on Oct. 24, 1843. Susanah married (2) Hiram McCanlies in Hempstead Co. AR. She died
in TX.

Sue, have you found out any more on Robert Griffing and Elizabeth Shaw? Also, I have a hypotheses regarding the parents of Robert Griffing. William Griffing, Sr. b- 1715 and d- abt. 1778 married Frances Parlia Horton, if my info is correct.
They had 11 children and some of the names were William (my ancestor), Zadok, Ebenezer (who settled in Kentucky), Robert b-1742 (hint), Frank (Francis), Lydia, Jasper, and others I don't have names for. (Probably died early in life.)
Is it possible that the Robert Griffing, b- 1742 (who I have no other history on) could be the father of Robert Griffing that married Elizabeth Shaw? It is possible, being that these families were in contact with their other relatives in New Jersey. Robert Griffing's children have similar family names. Just a thought.
