The original will of Enoch Grigsby can be found in the Edgefield County SC Archives in Box 38, pkg 1493. It is signed 6 Nov 1789 and proven by witnesses William Butler, William Simkins, and Sampson Butler 6 Jan 1795.
I have a poor photocopy of the original will and will be glad to transcribe as best I can in full when I have more time. The will mentions beloved wife Mary [Butler] Grigsby, son Ridon Grigsby, daughter Susannah Hill [Mrs. Lodowick Hill], son James Grigsby, daughter Nancy Grigsby [later Mrs. Samuel Mays], daughter Elizabeth Grigsby [later Mrs. Thomas Butler], and daughter Sarah Grigsby [later Mrs. Jonathan Moore].
Lodowick Hill [son-in-law] and son James Grigsby were appointed in the will to be executors. The court in 1795 instead appointed wife Mary Gigsby, son Rhydon Grigsby, and son-in-law Samuel Mays as administrators with the will annexed. The term, with the will annexed, means that there was a will but either there were no executors appointed by the will or those appointed could not or would not serve.
Undocumented statements repeated often by researchers state that James died at age 19 by a fall from a horse. I have no death date for him. Lodowick Hill reportedly lived until 27 Jul 1822. Why he failed to serve as executor I do not know.
