Can Grimwood be pronounced Grim'd?
I've recently found Grimerd in my family tree - a family in Warwick in 19th century, on my grandmother's side. IGI has only 37 altogether, my Warwick family plus some in Suffolk/Essex/London/Inverness. Because it appears so rarely, I wonder if it's a corruption of something more plentiful. If Grimwood may be pronounced Grim'd, might some harassed clerk have produced Grimerd (or Grimard, one or two 'm's, or Gremerd in 17th cent. Suffolk)) when faced with illiterate informants? Any ideas? I'd be interested to know the origins of Grimwood name anyway, in case. It seems to be an eastern counties name - from over the north sea?
