"Grishaw" is apparently a derived name from another name - probably Grimshaw or, possibly, Grischau or Grischow (German names). Most of the earliest records for Isaac Spice Grimshaw apparently find hi m in Virginia. These records indicate that he had the name "Grishaw" from the time of his arrival in America or his birth in Virginia - it was not a mistake of a census taker, for example. Isaac marri ed "Lettuce" (probably Leticia, Letitia or Lettrice) in Virginia, and the couple had seven children - Susan, Priscilla, Elizabeth, William, Hannah, Isaac and Martha. Most, if not all, of the family mi grated to Kentucky, and many subsequently moved to Indiana. Most records indicate that Isaac was born in Virginia, but others indicate that he was born in Scotland. If this record is accurate it is much more likely that his family was originally the Lancastrian "Grimshaw" than of German origins.
I would love to exchange and share my info if interested.
