Hi Steve:
I though you might be interested in some "alternative" information on your WILLIAM LE GROS of Suffolk Co., England, Circa 1282.
I have been researching this (and parallel) LE GROS/GROSS lines of early England for about 30 years and have compiled a considerable amount of linked (and unlinked) linages.According to my information (all of which was obtained from wills, land records, and the five ancient English publication that are generally accepted as containing reliable lineage information)your WILLIAM LE GROS was probably a 5th or 6th generation descendant of WILLELMUS GROSSUS (a.k.a WILLIAM LE GROS) who was a soldier with William The Concqueror in 1066, serving under HUGH DE MONTFORT who was from Montfort-Sur-Risle in Normandy. This LE GROS/GROSS line received much land in Suffolk Co. that was actually under the control of MONFORT.
I recognize the lineage you listed as the original work of Louis Gross (now deceased) who compiled some 50,000 names in his publication (microfilm original in the New York City Public Library with copy in the Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City).Much of Lou's information on this LE GROS/GROSS line was derived from a book in the Boston Public Library entitled "Windecker-Gross and Allied Families."
Unfortunately, there are a great many errors in the Windecker-Gross manuscript and thus in Lou's work. For exasmple, your WILLIAM was a member of the Suffolk/Kent Co. "branch" and OLIVER was a member of the Norfolk Co. branch, the two branches having definitely separated into two family lines by about 1250.Also, the most reliable information strongly indicates that your OLIVER was not born in Agincourt (France). In fact, the preponderance of evidence indicates he never left England.
There are far too many details involved in my research to elaborate in this forum but I'll be happy to supply it to you off line if you are interested.
Goog rooting,
Jack
