Were your ancestors direct from Germany, or were they Germans from the Russian Empire?
My great grandparents (name now spelled Greenwald) were Germans from the Russian Empire who emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, but eventually left to settle the Canadian prairies. I do not know if they had other relatives near Rio, or the original spelling of the name, but if there is a 'link', let me know. Hope this helps.
