Origin of Gubbins: Irish or English?

I am a Gubbins from Chile and I am wondering where the Gubbins name originated. Some say Gubbins are originally Irish, others, English. Were the Gubbins Catholic or Protestant, or both?

Does anyone have explicit information on this?
