Gilliatt and Gilliat are the most popular spelling, but Gilliot, Gilleat, Gilliatte, Guilliatt,Ga.., Ge.., Gu.., etc are all found, even within the same family after a generation or two. All one has to do to see the possibilities with the name is to go to the Orange Co, IN website and see the variations of Gilliatt within 50 years of John Gilliatt's arrival.
The family was originally French Huguenots that resettled in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire England from around 1500. There are some families in the US by the name of Gilliott/Guilliot, but from their forenames appear to have actually come from France. There were Gilliots in Accomack Co VA that changed the spelling to Gillet, etc.
The name is a diminutive form of Julian.I have a paper on the name that Paul Gilliatt located in England about 20 years ago that I will share if you wish.
