My great-granfather was named Hans Guler, and came over to America from Chur, Switzerland, sometime circa 1917. He raised an entire second family here in Wisconsin, leaving behind a wife and children in Switzerland.
His second family consisted of his wife, Frances Alva Wick Guler (later Peart), and his sons: LaVere, LaVerne, Leonhard, and Delbert. Leonhard "Midge" Guler was my paternal grandfather (d. March, 1998).
Leonhard had five children: Jack/John (the eldest, my father); George; Kim and Kay (fraternal twins) and Todd Alan.
My grandfather told me of distant cousins living in Dubuque, Iowa, although we never really established close ties. My own understanding is that there was a "falling out" between my great-grandfather and his kin across the river (Mississippi) in Iowa.
Hans was an alcoholic. In 1932, around Christmas-time, he went to the local tavern in downtown Cuba City, Wisconsin, on Main Street (it still stands today). While there he got into a bar fight, and pulled through the scrape. However, as he was leaving, standing outside, someone hit him with a heavy glass bottle and he was rendered unconscious. He died of hypothermia.
The older boys grew up alone without a father, until Orville Peart married Hans Guler's widow in 1945. Orville was my step-great-grandfather (d. Nov. 1990).
My Grandfather Guler (Leonhard) and my father (John) have both been back to the hometown of Chur, Switzerland. Some our relatives there have come to see us.
In 1988, a William Guler, from Dubuque,Iowa, introduced himself to my mother up in a Green Bay, Wisconsin, (where we lived during the time) department store in a very fateful chance encounter. Otherwise, this is about all the history I can related.
The family of Hans Guler is centered in Cuba City, Wisconsin, with a few exceptions in Madison, Wisconsin; Neenah/Menasha, WI area; and, Waukegan/Chicago, IL area.
