Hi Nikki

My family married into the Gunning line back in the 1800's. A nephew of Maria Gunning (the grandson of her brother, Gen. John Gunning) arrived in New York in 1800. They lived in Bloomingdale, NY, for a few years before migrating to Ohio where they founded Bloomingdale, OH.

There is a lot of information on the web about Maria Gunning. Several books were written about her and Maria's more famous sister Elizabeth Gunning.

My grandmother used to correspond with the Lord of Coventry many decades ago. I visited with the Duke of Argyll in 1998 and 1999. He had 14 paintings of the Gunning family throughout his castle in western Scotland.

In Ireland, there's a restored manor/castle - Castlecoote - outside of Roscommon. It's a shrine to the Gunning sisters.

Both sisters are the great-great grandchildren of Grace O'Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen. She was quite a powerful and cunning character. Her castle is on Clare Island off the west coast of Ireland. My son and I visited the island and Castlecoote last summer.

Are you a cousin?

Best always,

John McLaughlin
