My great grandfather, Thomas Gunning, emigrated from Ireland in 1943. He lived in Hartford, CT for the rest of his life. One of his sons, Daniel, married an African-American woman and their oldest son moved to Philadelphia in the 1920's. His name was Hosmer D. Gunning and his wife was Margaret A. Gunning. He was butler and she was the cook in a home at 215 Pelham Road. I found Hosmer's death in 1996 in the Social Security records. That's all I know about them. If you are aware of any African-American Gunnings in Phildelphia, I would be interested in learning about that.
