Dixie, to answer your questions: The William in old Rap. Co. also had a Francis Gupton who died bef 1709 - probably a child - nothing more is known.
Stephen who m. Phebe Baxter: Stephen's father, William Garland Gupton died when Stephen was about 10 or 12 and his father's half brother, George Miskell became his guardian. When Stephen was about 20 (date of birth not know exactly 1768-70) he sold the land he had inherited from his father in Richmond Co. VA to George Miskell and bought land in Culpeper Co. The deed dated Jan 18. 1791. On Nov 24 1791 he m. Phebe Baxter, daughter of Alexander Baxter and Mary Byram. Phebe's sister Elizabeth m. Warner Yates and at some point in the late 1790.s the Yates and Gupton families moved to Green co. Kentucky. Stephen and Phebe were in Ky by 1799 when "Stephen Gupton enters 200 a. of second rate land cert. #1342 on the waters of Big Russell and Little Russell Creeks...near the big road leading from Greentown (present day Greensburg) to McKinney's cabins." Stephen and Phebe brought 3 of their children; Garland,b. 1792, Henrietta (Haney) b. 1793 and Miscal b. 1797 to KY. Phebe may have been pregnant with Tapley who was b. 1799 in Green Co. They had Phenton in 1800 or 1801 and Alexander in 1803. Stephen became too ill to work about 1803. There is record that he could not fulfill work on the road because of ill health. He was apparently an educated man for in 1801 the neighbors contracted him to open a school. Stephen died before 20 Aug 1804 when Warner Yates was appointed administrator to Stephen Gupton, dec'd. Phebe was pregnant with their 7th child Stephen Gupton Jr. b. 6 Feb. 1805. Phebe continued to live on the land . She paid taxes on 164 acres on Big Russell Creek in 1804. She never remarried but around 1814 sho had another child, Mary "Polly" Gupton. It isn't known who Mary's father was, but she was given the name of Gupton. Phebe died about 1861.
