The Cheatham and Montgomery Co. Guptons are from a branch of the original "Gupton tree" that originated with William Gupton who came to Old Rappahannock Co. VA from England about 1662. This William had two sons that lived to have descendants; William and Stephen. Many of the Tennessee and North Carolina Guptons originated from William Jr. and wife Mary Dolan line and the Virginia > Kentucky line originated with Stephen and wife Elizabeth Harford. I think there is another branch that originated from a John Gupton in Maryland about the same time. I've run across some "Northern Guptons" that I couldn't place who probably came from John Gupton's line. (see my post about the three branches of Guptons elsewhere in this forum) The Gupton Embalming School and Funeral home Guptons are descendants of Alexander Gupton and his wife Florence Drucilla McNeal who came to Nashville in 1876 from Warren Co. KY. Alexander was born in Green Co. KY to a Baptist minister also named Alexander and his wife Frances Galloway. There are a lot of Stephen Guptons in both lines. There was a Stephen M. Gupton, a minister, who was a brother to Alexander and who lived in Nashville for a time.
