Early Guptons

Most Gupton researchers cite William Gupton in Richmond Co. VA as the immigrant, but I am not so sure. William had a son, Stephen and I believe his father was also Stephen. There is a record of a Stephen Gupton that is too early to be the son of William (can't put my hands on it right now, but -) I ran across a most interesting entry in the Perogative Court Records of Maryland in January of 1677. The Court allows Justinian Gerrard (who later appeared in the Northern Neck region of VA) administration of the estate of Stephen Gupton, widower with one son, William, who was under age. Gerrard Slye took the bond.
I would have so much liked to have shared that bit of info with my mother who passed away in December. She was a Gupton and an avid researcher.
