The earliest record of my Great-Great Grandfather Albert NASON (b 1833 Paterson, Passaic Co., NJ, d abt 1870 NC) is the 1850 Cumberland Co., NC, census, in which he appears in the household of John & Elizabeth NASON KERSHAW. I have recently gotten some new information and am trying to find out more about this family.

The new information is that Elizabeth, likely Albert’s widowed mother, was Elizabeth GURNEE NAASSON, with roots probably in Rockland Co., NY, where there were both GURNEEs & NASONs. This information comes from a document in the possession of a KERSHAW descendant. Previously, I had found the record of Elizabeth’s KERSHAW marriage: “Family Chronicles of the Paterson Intelligencer Newspaper, Marriages and Deaths 1825-1856,” by Maryjane Proctor, 6 Apr 1836: “Married on Sunday Last [3 Apr], by the Rev. J.C. VANDERVOORT, Mr. John KERSHAW, Jr., to Miss [sic?] Elizabeth NASAN."). Rev. John C. VANDERVOORT also performed the marriage that same year of Jarvis GURNEE to Miss Oberea BILLINGS (newspaper issue of 23 Jan 1836).

There was a Stephen NASON in Paterson who resided there 1825-1832 although I have not been able to find him in the 1830 NJ census. He is probably related to my Albert NASON. Stephen is recorded in the following:
Census, Paterson, New Jersey 1824-1832 Compiled by Samuel Fisher 1777-1856 (Passaic County Historical Society, Bulletin v. 4 nos. 11-12, August 1958):
Stephen NASON 1825, 1827, 1829, 1832

Earlier, there was a Stephen NASON in nearby Rockland Co., NY, who may be the same Stephen that was later in New Jersey. (There was also a GURNEE family in Rockland Co.)

1810 NY census, Rockland Co.:
Stephen NASON p163 10010-00
(There was a James GURNEE on p164)

1820 NY census, Rockland Co.:
Stephen NASON p302

Paterson, NJ, is now in Passaic County, which was formed from part of Bergen and Essex, 8 February 1837. Originally, Paterson was part of Acquackanonk Township.

John KERSHAW was b 17 Apr 1811 Lancashire, England, d 19 Mar 1874 Manchester, Cumberland Co., NC. (He was the son of John and Elizabeth BUTTERWORTH KERSHAW; the family emigrated to America in 1823.) Elizabeth GURNEE NASON KERSHAW was b 23 Feb 1815 NJ or NY, d 16 May 1893, probably in or near Florence, Florence Co., SC. The KERSHAWs moved from NJ to SC (resided in Anderson, Pickens, & Greenville counties) by 1839; back to NJ by 1849; from NJ to Cumberland Co., NC, by 1850; back to NJ abt 1868; & back to Cumberland Co., NC, by 1874, where John died. By 1878, several of the family, including the widow Elizabeth, had moved to Darlington Co., SC, and later were in Florence Co., SC, which was formed partly from Darlington in 1888.

Albert NASON m Marenda STRICKLAND (b 24 Aug 1832) 13 Jun 1854 Cumberland Co., NC. They had the following children: N. Elizabeth, b abt 1855 (died young); George Washington b 19 Jul 1857; Cornelius Frances “Neely” b abt 1858 Moore Co., NC (married Kenneth STRICKLAND abt 1880); & William Albert “Willie” b abt 1860 Moore Co, NC (this is the one who appears to have moved to Bishopville, Sumter Co, SC).
