David, wondering if you ever found out the info you were looking for.
I too am researching Gurnees from New York to Michigan.
My GGGrandfather, John J. Gurnee was born in New York and is in the Michigan census' for years 1870 married to Lucy Chambers/Chamberlain and in the 1880 census with Lucy and son Herbert J. Gurnee. Nothing after that. but the name spelling changed between 1880 and 1900 when Lucy and Herbert are listed as "Gurney".
My Grandmother told me years ago that the spelling had been changed. So my Grandfather John H. Gurney was the first generation born of the "Gurney" spelling.
Everything the inf that I have found, leads me to the Garniers of New York and France. But having trouble finding John J's father.
Any info you can share is greatly appreciated.
