This does clarify some things. My great grandfather was Emil F. Gust. He was born in 1839 and died July 5, 1917. My great grandmother was Henrietta Noftz. She was born in 1849 and died July 7, 1917. Their children were Hermina (Minnie), Herman, Martha, Louisa, Emil (my grandfather) and Marie. Listed below are records I have found. From what you are saying and what I have found, it looks like my great grandfather went by both Emil and Ferdinand. It also looks like his mother was Constance/Constentina Wrobel Gust Schulz and Ferdinand Schulz was his Stepfather. Hermine and Herman Schulz his half brother and sister.
According to Baltimore Immigration and Passenger Lists 1820-1872, Ferdinand Gust arrieved in Baltimore on April 22, 1870. Baltimore Passenger Lists 1820-1948 lists the following people:
Ferdinand Gust 31 yrs Occupation - Shoemaker
Hermine Schulz 20 yrs
Ferdinand Schulz 58 yrs
Constantine Sculz 58 yrs
Carl Hermann 25 yrs
Henriette Nofs 20 yrs
The port of departure was Bremen, Germany and they arrived in Baltimore on April 22, 1870.
The 1870 Census shows, Ferdinand Schultz, Constatina Schultz, Hermina Schulz and Ferdinand Herst age 30 all at the same residence in Detroit, Ward 10, Wayne, Michigan.
Michigan Marriages 1868 -1925:
Hermine Schulz married Adolph Knapp August 23, 1870. Witnesses were Ferdinand Schulz and Ferdinand Gust.

Hermine Gust Born April 28, 1871 and Christened May 8, 1871. Parents - Ferdinand Gust and Henrietta Noftz
Hermin Gust Born April 28, 1871 but no Christening record. Parents - Ferdinand and Henrietta Gust
Michigan Marriages 1868 -1925
Hermine Gust married Ernest Borst on Feb 8, 1896. Parents of Bride were Emil Gust and Henrietta Noftz. Parents of Groom were Karl Borst and Wilhelmina Schultz. Witnesses were Chris Brickert and Herman Schulz.
Johanna Gust born 1855 married Herman Gust born 1848 on Feb 16, 1874 I don't know if/how Johanna ties in with your or my branch of the Gust family.

I would appreciate any information you can give me that you have on your Gust family and if possible my great grandfather Emil Gust.
