Dear Cousin Alice:

You've got the correct family! Your Frederich Gust Jr. was the older brother of my great-grandfather, Emil Johann Gust. Their parents were Frederich Sr. and Freidericka Buestrin. Fred Sr.'s name at immigration in 1839 was listed as Martin Freiderich. He came with his parents, Martin Sr. and Sophia. They lived in Milwaukee. They appeared in the 1850 census. In 1853, the year that Oshkosh became a city, Fred Sr (born Martin Freiderich), wife Fredericka, and a couple of kids in tow moved to Oshkosh.

Fred Jr. and Augusta Merton married in Oshkosh. They lived for awhile in Winnebago Co. I know that Fred Jr. and wife Augusta moved to Nebraska in the 1880s, and that is where I lost track of them. Apparently you picked up their info out there. I think the 1890 census substitute in an application for widow's benefits for Augusta and her child, so apparently Fred Jr. died soon after moving to Nebraska. When Fred Sr. and Freidericka died in 1905, Fred Jr. was not listed as a surviving child.
