What, or where, is the marne area? My Haacks come from Bruhnsdorf, which is a (probably now almost a ghost) town near the 'big' city of Wohrden. Wohrden is West of Heide on the B203. I have just this last night determined the name of the ship, and entry date of my great grandfather, thanks to the newly-opened Ellis Iland Records website :) On 21 MAR 1892 entered the Wieland, carrying at least 6 Haacks. Four of these Haacks were almost certainly my great grandfather and 3 of his brothers, viz: Claudius Haack, Jacob Haack (my line), Wilhelm Haack (Wilh.), and Heinrich Haack (Heinr.). These four Haacks are listed together with another, Anna Haack, in the ship's manifest. My Jacob had a sister of that name, of about the right age, so maybe that is her. Another Haack was Georg Haack, who is listed as 15 years old. My Jacob had a brother Georg also, but he would have been only about 10 at the time. I note also the presence of at least 2 Harders on board (my Jacob's mother was a Harder). These were Magdalena Harder, aged 25 (and unmarried), and Margareta Harder, aged 2 (listed together in the manifest). I am trying to find more, but the Ellis Island site is VERY busy these days. Cheers, -gb- gbonner@umich.edu
