I appear to have been too quick - I assumed it was Dutch as my father is Dutch. However, a quick web search revealed it be quite common in northern Germany. As my father is originally from Groningen (which is a northern city within the Netherlands), its possible (probably likely, considering the vastly greater area that northern Germany covers compared to northern Netherland) that the name is in fact of Northern Germanic origin.
