No, It is not hard at all. They had to be "living" then, however.
First go to the LDS site here:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
Select 1880 United States Census
Type only the surname of the family member born between 1800-1840 you are trying to locate
In the birth year you type 1800.
In the birth range you select + or - 20 years.
Census state PA (if that is where your family member lived)
----
That takes care of anyone born between 1800-1820

Then you follow the same procedure but this time you type
1820 for the birth year. In the birth range,you select + or - 20 years.
That will cover the individuals born between 1820 and 1840.
Add the two lists and you have the names of those individuals who were alive in 1880.

You could search for anyone born before 1800 also by following this procedure.
