I'm not a descendant of the Hafley family, but am possibly related to a particular branch of the Hafley family.
I'm wondering if someone can tell me who were the parents of Thomas Hafley who married Catherine Brooks (who is my ancestor) in St. Clair Co., IL in 1856. Catherine's family were living near Lebanon at this time, and I note that there was a Rachel Hafley in Lebanon in the 1880 census- is this the Rachel Hafley you're talking about?
Thomas Hafley sued Catherine for divorce in 1862 in St. Clair Co., stating that she had deserted him, having left with a Thomas Welsh, and that he (Thomas Hafley) and Catherine had had one child, Menard Hafley. I do not know if all of Thomas's statement is correct (that is, as far as who Catherine left with), but am quite certain that she is the Catherine Howard who appears in the census records in Collinsville, Madison Co., IL as the wife of Paris Howard, because of connections this Catherine Howard had with the family of Catherine Brooks- in spite of the facts that she had been completely estranged from her sons (Menard and his older half-brother, my great-grandfather, William Henry Manville) and that her death certificate states that her maiden name was Bryant. Catherine died in Collinsville in 1911.
To get back to my questions:
Does anyone know who Thomas Hafley's parents were?
Does anyone know when and where he died, and what became of the son, Menard Hafley?
