Hi Mark --
I followed you here from the WARREN GenForum. My gr-grandmother is a WARREN. I am in NO WAY RELATED to you, Virginia (Warren) Evans, any other person being discussed in this thread, or anyone with whom you are communicating. But, as a result of your lookup request in Bellingham on the Warren Board, I decided to do a little research, "just in case" ... ;-].
Another interesting tidbit Carol may NOT have passed along about the 1920 Bellingham Census is that Merrie/Merry was enumerated as "Florence M."! Her age was 1-1/12 years -- the Census date was Jan. 4, 1920 -- this means that Merrie was b. Nov/Dec 1918. Also, NO son is listed in the household.
On the 1930 Census for Rowland, CA, the Evans' are living on First Street near Hill Street and Glendora Blvd (now Glendora Ave.). Their home NO LONGER EXISTS and sat INSIDE the boundary of what is NOW La Puente High School, La Puente, CA. This is pretty much in the East San Gabriel Valley area, between El Monte and West Covina/Covina, to the east of the City of Los Angeles.
Son Edward, Jr., shows up on the 1930 Census as 10 years old, b. in WA. According to rules of enumeration, Ed Jr. must have ALREADY been 10 years old when he was listed. The census date was Apr. 19, 1930. This means that Ed Jr. was b. sometime between Jan. 4 to Apr. 19, 1920! Also in 1930, the FATHER, Ed Sr., is listed as a "Water Driller" (as Carol noted), a MUCH NEEDED occupation in this area at that time and consistent with your description of him being a mining engineer.
I was born and raised (1940's-1960's) not too far from there (maybe a 15-20 minute drive), and I can tell you that this whole area is naturally as DRY AS A BONE -- might as well be DESERT if it weren't for the millions of folks now living there! When I was young, a LOT of this area was ORANGE GROVES, irrigated via manmade aqueducts -- now, it's ALL CONCRETE, not a speck of dirt to be found ANYWHERE! Where I lived, we were on well water, too -- one of the FEW areas in LA County. The next town over from me was on County water. That stuff tasted UGLY and our water was almost as "sweet" as some of the really good spring water up here in the Skagit, Samish and Nooksack Valleys.
Finally, my own research reveals that there is NO POSSIBLE relationship between Virginia Evans and ANY Elizabeth Maye Warren. On the 1910 Bellingham Census, she is listed as "Lizzie May," age 20 (b. ca. 1889/90), b. in MI (! -- not in AL). She is in the household of her parents, John and Mary Warren, both b. in the UK. This is DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED to Virginia, who was b. in AL, Father was b. in AL and Mother was (according to the 1920 Census) French and born AT SEA!
Being curious, I did a search on VIR*/GIN*/JIN*/JEN* Warren, b. in AL in 1895 +/- 2 years (according to both the 1920 and 1930 Census, she was b. ca. 1894/95). THERE IS NO SUCH VIRGINIA WARREN ANYWHERE IN THE USA! I broadened my search a little bit and turned up ONLY ONE Virginia Warren IN THE ENTIRE USA that could POSSIBLY be considered. However, I personally DO NOT THINK THIS IS THE CORRECT ONE! It is Virginia Warren, b. ca. 1899, in the household of Levi and Lucy/Kate (same lady, two different censuses) Warren, in Gum Springs, Blount Co., AL, both 1900 and 1910 -- no mention on either census of Lucy/Kate being born anywhere other than AL (this is why I think this is the WRONG Virginia).
That leaves the question: "Is Virginia's maiden name really WARREN"? Only official documentation, such as birth, death, burial or marriage certificate, can properly answer this question. My bet is that you have a copy of the marriage certificate. Thereupon should be listed her place of birth, date of birth, and the NAMES OF HER PARENTS. If you DON'T have this, the Whatcom Co. Courthouse is only a few minutes from your doorstep and, for just a few bucks, you can get the answer to this question!
I hope this gives you a couple more items to talk about when you communicate with Jessica. In the meantime,
Best regards, your "neighbor,"
Oak Harbor, WA
