The Halliburton's are related to Sir Walter Scot, this has been confirmed. But the interesting story is this...Col. James Burd was the son of Edward and Jane (Halliburton) Burd.
The family lore...(stored in a safety deposit box for multiple generations), states in detail each generation back to Charlemagne. This information has been passed down from father to son, mother to daughter.
Consider the spring of 1748, when James Burd eloped with his young bride Sarah Shippen, her furious father intent on Thrashing the scrappy Ulster Scot, found peace when he found out that James Burd was directly descended from Scottish nobility through his mother Jane Halliburton. James was born on an estate called Ormiston in Edinburgh, educated and brought up as a gentleman but encouraged to become a soldier. James decided to make his way in America and after becoming a landowner he decided to join the Patriot's cause. Sarah's father, Edward Shippen found out quickly that his daughter could not have married better. It is written that Edward Shippen, first mayor of Philadelphia, embraced his new son-in-law with open arms and considered him a son.
Check out the Genealogy of the Halliburton's and I think you will find them well documented.
Toodles,
