Hi, Jess.
I will address your points one by one.
1.) Sorry, I don’t know anything off-hand about Anne Humphries who married Samuel Clay Halliburton. Was she really only 11 years old when she got married? I’ll check my records to see if she could be a Humphries from a later generation.
2.) John Humphries b. ca. 1745 is on my family line, so I can tell you about him.He was probably born in Virginia as his father received a grant of land there in 1747.The family moved to NC about 1760 and to Johnston Co. NC about 1765.The part of Johnston they lived in became Wake Co., NC about 1771.John lived in Wake Co. NC for many years and was usually called John “the Saddler” in the county records .There were 6 men named John Humphries who lived in Wake Co. NC from 1765 to 1805, so, to avoid confusion, most of the adults with that name were given “nicknames” in the county records.I wrote an article for the Virginia Genealogist published in 2005 entitled “Leaving Southside Virginia: Tracking the Humphries Brothers from Brunswick County Virginia to Wake County, North Carolina” that discusses the relationships between the various men.In the article, I present evidence thatJohn “the Saddler”was the son of William Humphries who was himself the son of John and Mary White Humphries of Brunswick Co., Va.Since that article was published, Y-DNA evidence shows that descendants of John the Saddler match a descendant of Charles Humphries, another son of John and Mary White Humphries. As you say, John the Saddler’s wife was Catherine. Her last name is usually spelled McElroy. Her father was Archibald McElroy.Evidence for this is a deed where she gave dower rights for land she inherited from Archibald that was sold by her husband John Humphries.John and Catherine left Wake Co. NC in 1800 and moved to Pendleton District SC.John’s will was probated there in 1808.His will lists 7 children, one of whom was my ancestor William.
3.)The John Humphries who married Nancy Halliburton is thought be the son of “Virginia John” Humphries.Virginia John Humphries was one of the six men named John Humphries who lived in Wake Co. NC from about 1765-1805 that I mentioned before. This John Humphries was a first cousin of John “the Saddler” Humphries.Virginia John's son's middle name is not known for sure.It has been interpreted as Harwood, Haywood or Howard.Virginia John's will shows the son's middle name as Howard.John’s marriage record to Nancy Halliburton can be found in “Marriages of Orange County North Carolina” compiled by Brent Holcomb and published in 1983.They were married 20 Dec. 1800.W. H. Burton (probably William Halliburton) was bondsman.Nancy is thought to be a daughter of William Halliburton, and hence a granddaughter of David Hallburton and Amy (probably) Humphries.
4.)I think you are talking here about a Halliburton record that states that John Halliburton, grandson of David and Amy Halliburton, married “Miss Humphries.”I have tried and tried to find out who this Miss Humphries could be.I have not come across any records of her first name either in North Carolina or Tennessee. The grandchildren of David Halliburton and Amy Humphries interacted most closely with the family of Virginia John Humphries, but all of Va. John's daughters are accounted for regarding husbands.Va. John’s uncles Charles and William also lived in Wake Co. up to the late 1770s but were gone by 1780.William does not have any known children except John “the Saddler” who was pushing 30 years of age by 1774.William might have had a daughter born that year, but it doesn't seem likely.Charles’s estate was administered in 1803 in South Carolina and did not mention a son-in-law Halliburton even though John Halliburton’s wife was still alive then and Charles’s will mentions 3 other sons-in-law.So we have run out of candidates to be this Miss Humphries.I’m beginning to think that this identification was an error and that she was mixed up with another Humphries who married into the Halliburton family, perhaps Martha Humphries, who married Thomas Halliburton, son of Amy and David. But my mind is open.
5.)The earliest ancestor on this line that I know about is Evan Humphries who was living in Surry Co., Va. in 1677. He is discussed in Brent Holcomb’s book about the Humphries.I don’t know of any evidence about who his parents were.If you have evidence that his parents were Evan Humphries b. 1618 and Judith Davies I would love to see that. There is evidence in the Surry Co. VA tithable records that Evan and Jane had sons Robert and Evan, Jr.Lou Poole, a Humphries family researcher, has pointed out that “Evan” is the name “John” in Welsh so Evan Jr. may be identical with the John Humphries in Brunswick Co. Va. who was married to Mary White. Evan, Jr. changing his name to John would be the equivalent of a German man named Johann changing his name to John when he came to America--not much of a leap. Therefore, it seems as though there is probably not a third son named "John."You mention Brunswick Co., PA.John and Mary White Humphries lived in Brunswick Co. VA.Lou Poole and I studied the issue carefully and we found no direct evidence that John and Mary White Humphries were the parents of Amy Halliburton or that they had any daughters at all, since only sons are mentioned in John’s 1738 will. But there is a pretty good case that can be made from circumstantial evidence that Amy was their daughter.David Halliburton is well documented in the records of Lunenburg Co., Va. (which was taken from Brunswick Co. Va. in 1745) and he left a will in Orange Co. NC in 1767.Strangely, no one seems to have been able to connect him for sure to a Halliburton family back in Scotland so I would be interested in knowing the source of the information that you have about where he was born in Scotland.
What is your relationship to the Humphries and Halliburtons? Are you descended from David and Amy Halliburton, and if so, which child? If you have any other Humphries family descents, I would be interested in talking about them, also.
Thanks.
Charlene
