I was told by my great grandfather that the original name was Amel. This is French, from a famous French explorer, (I think)When our family came down from Canada, they changed the spelling to Hamel. The spelling that was on the 1900 census was Hammell. When my great great grandfather left his family, his wife, probably out of spite, changed the spelling to Hammell. We have still have Hamel relatives who didn't change the spelling.
My grandma says that they spelled their last name many different ways, depending on how their mood struck them. So, there doesn't seem to be any true reason for all of the variations other than whim.
It certainly makes genealogical research difficult.
