This must've been a custom of the times. Gilbert's Marie Lillie was always Lillian, Berthe was Gert, Amanda was Maude, and my Dad Rene Magloire went by Rodney. Maybe I'll just start signing all my checks "Jim." No wonder it's so hard to track these people!
