And to add to the nickname confusion, at one time our government told double-named families in Quebec to pick one name or the other and to drop the 'dit' and 'de',
so,wisely our ancestors used it to their benefit, some married the first time using their first name and Hamelin, and for their second marriage, hopefully once widowed, they used their middle name and the second family name like Laganiere.Not only it is totally confuse the bureaucrats (and taxcollectors) but caused some of the children to go by either/or names...and now we try to figure it out!!!
