Hello Jo!
Not sure if you remember, but you did some translating work for my mother Barb M. from Nova Scotia on McLennan Ab. Dios. pages.
Anyway, Specifically I am researching 2 Francois Hamelins (& their immediate families), possibly linked to a Solomon and Augustin Hamelin.
I recently rec'd info from the Alberta Prov. Archives - The First Families of the West by the Oblates.They say;
Augustin Hamelin of Louis Charles & Josette LeSable
child:Salomon Hamelin b. 1810
[I have seen this solomon recorded as son of Jacques & Angelique tourangeau)
[They infer that from Solomon came Francois Sr. This does not jibe with any records I have seen, so I am thinking there has to be another Solomon altogether (if at all).]
FRANCOIS Hamelin [SR. b. abt. 1800] M. Catherine Courteoreille Nipissing bap. July 23, 1843
Their Children:
Jean-Baptiste b. 1825 bap. 11-11-45 M. Suzanne Newotchikchewis
Pierre b. 1827 bap. 7-10-55 M. Marianne Mekomiltekwow/Nipissing
Antoine b. 1829 bap 11-11-45 M. Isabelle Bruneau
Joseph-L b.1831 bap. 11-11-45 M. 1) Marie CourteoreilleM. 2) Louise Larence
Marie b. 1833 bap.11-11-45 M. Jacques [possibly James] Courteoreille
Basile b. 1836 bap. 12-12-44
Aishange (?? spelling hard to read) b. 1839 bap. 12-12-44
Charles b. 1841 bap. 12-12-44
FRANCOIS JR. b. 1843 bap. 12-12-44
Isabelle b. Nov 8 1847 bap. 12-12-44
End of this portion of the Oblates file.
FRANCOIS JR. is recorded b. 1843-1845 Lac La Nonne M. Catherine Whitefish in St Albert.
What's really messy here is all their children claim another woman as their mother on scrip & baptism records.
Their Children according to SCRIP & Baptism records:
Philomene b. 1870, Bap Apr 2 or 7 1870 M. Martin Gladu claims Marie A-ti-co-muk as mother on scrip.
Cyprien bap. 9-25-1872 @ 5 mos in Grouard. d. 1874, Buried 4-10-1874.
Sophie R. b. 1875 Lesser Slave Lake M. J. Bte. Cardinal 8-15-1897 at ST AUGUSTIN MISSION, Peace River.Sophie claims mother Madeline Nault on scrip.
Paul Bap. Sept 7, 1879 @ 8 mos in Grouard.Bap Record says Son of Francois & Madeleine Tastawich.
Marie, b. abt 1886 M. Ambroise Thomas b. 1868 on Sept 14, 1900 St Augustin Mission,Peace River.alta gen.society shows Marie b. 1876 on baptism record - this makes sense if she claims Madeleine as her mother)Marie claims Madeleine Hamelin on scrip.
Angele Amilia, b.1881 & bap May 30, 1885 Ft. Vermillion. M. George McCallister(McCorrister Birth : DEC 1880
) on Sept. Dec 06, 1902 in St Augustin Mission.Catherine Whitefish named mother to her & all others on scrip. No baptism info for her.
Elise b. 1883 bap. June 24, 1883 in Ft. Vermillion. M. Alex McCorrister/McAllister Sept 14, 1900. Elise claims mother"madeleine" on marriage cert. & "Magdeleine" on birth/Bapt cert.
Emilie aka Millie, bap May 28, 1889 at age 1 1/2 in St Augustin Mission, Peace River {alta gen.society shows Emilie b. 1887 on baptism record).Emile & following children claimed as deceased in scrip records.
Alfred b. Nov 13, 1889. Bap Nov 18, 1889 in Grouard. Died in Carcajou (Wolverine Point)
St Pierre, b & d. in Carcajou (Wolverine Point)
Lena b. & d. in Carcajou (Wolverine Point)
The Archives woman also found a death record for Sept 10 1922 or Oct. 9 1922 for a Madeleine Hamelin b. 1842, wife of Francois Hamelin at Friedenstal.
Just to mix it up a little more...I also saw a SCRIP record for a Napoleon Blondeau in favour of Francois Hamelin No. 9G for $71.10 in favour of Francois Hamelin heir to Jacques Hamelin.
Haven't checked yet to see if this is really related.
So this is the trail of my family that makes me crazy!I am really wondering what this mystery is... ie) Is Catherine Whitefish and Madeleine Attikamek (Cree for whitfish)the same woman?Or did Francois JR have 2 or even 3 wives, with only one "official"?
I guess I should check the actual scrip record dates to compare to the baptism information.
If you have any ideas or info, I'd sure LOVVVEEE to hear from you.
Take care,
Robyn
