Hi Heidi,

Amlaw is a corruption of the name Hamelin. If you couldn't read or write, and a lot of our family were simple farmers, you took the spelling of your name from what the census-taker wrote down. My dad Rodney Hamelin was born in Mooers Forks in 1890. His dad Gilbert was born there or thereabouts in 1856. HIS dad, Joseph, was born in 1823 in St-Philippe-de-Laprairie, where the family had dwelled for four generations. Any of this sound familier? Most of the Clinton County Hamelins were related, although a couple families were not.
