As you probably know, this name coud be spelled many different ways. Use GENFORUM or any of the other genealogy websites and mention as much information as you can each time, so those reading your message can try to piece together all the confusing spellings related to this name.

The following are just some of these (add your own):

AMELIN, AM[M]ELINE, HAMEL, HAMELIN (French form of Pied Piper city), HAM[M]ELL, HAMELINE, HAMILIN, HAMILINE, HAMELN (original German city name - Pied Piper).

Remember that "H" at the beginning of words was often dropped off - or added - depending on the language being spoken and the speaker. The "E" or "I" in the middle of the word was often dropped in the pronunciation. The "N" sound at the end was also often dropped. So, there are all kinds of possibilities.
