HAMMAN descendant

Hi, Ronnie,
I am, from what I can tell, descended from Johann Phillip Hamman. He would be my g-g-g-g grandfather, through William Cook Hamman, John Van Hamman, and Thomas J. Hamman, and Albert Hammons, who is my grandfather. (Who knows why the spelling change...rumor in my family is that Thomas J. did something he wasn't proud of, and basically wanted to hide out for a while, so began spelling his name HAMMONS.)

I have just started my research, and so far, have only what I see posted online to go off of (family trees, etc.).

I am wondering what places you would suggest going to find reliable info about the Hamman family, especially Johann Phillip Hamman, his life, times, military service, and his exploits as Indian Scout in Greenbrier. I have also been on the look out for the publications of which he is the subject, but have, so far, been unsuccessful.

Any direction you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeannie Beaty
daughter of Margie Hammons Jenkins
