Matthias Handlon and Harriet Walker

Information I have picked up, but am not related to:

Matthias Handlon born 4-24-1791 died 5-14-1858 married Harriet Walker born 7-21-1800 died 5-6-1856.

Matthias was born in Virginia and taken by his parents to Kentucky when he was 2. He was the son of Jeremiah Handlon, who was born in Ireland and died in Ky.

Matthias came to IL with his parents in Oct. of 1811. He married Miss Walker. He purchased 80 acres in Madison County in 1820, at Omph-Ghent Township. He later settled in the souther part of Bin Oak Twp, this was before 1825.

I also found where it was stated that it was originally thought that the name was O'Hanlan. He enlisted as Mathias Hanland Sergeant in the roster of the solders of the Black Hawk war from Madison County, he was on the muster roll of Captain Julius Barnsback's company of the mounted volunteers of the first regiment of the brigade, under Gen. Whiteside.

He built the house and barn on the farm in Madison County where his son George still lived in 1830. George was elected supervisor of the township in 1877 and served one term.

Matthias and Harriet reared a family of 11 children, only eight growing to mature years: James H., George, Walker, Jane, William, Ann, Eleanore and Martha. James, George and Walker were farmers in the township. William left for California during the gold rush and died there, he was not married.

Both Matthias and Harriet are buried at Oaklawn Cemetery, formerly Barnsback Graveyard, in the north end near their son James and his wife.

George Allan Handlon married Jessie M. Johnson in August 1913, both being born in 1880.

Most of this information was taken from Portrait and Biographical record of Madison County IL published in 1894 or the History of Madison County.
