Vivian J. (Vanderpool) Handy Obit
READING — Vivian J. Handy, 87, of Reading passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
She was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Jasper, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Eva Mae (Corwin) Vanderpool. Vivian graduated from Adrian High School in 1939 and became known as a “super cook” in various area restaurants. She attended Cambria Baptist Church and enjoyed hobbies involving ceramic crafts, flowers, traveling, hummingbirds, and especially, caring for her grandchildren. In 1940 she married Perry Handy and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include six daughters, Linda (Jim) VanPelt of Hudson, Penny (Buck) Rogers of Pittsford, Marge (George) Converse of Pioneer, Ohio, Phyllis (Dave) Brott of Reading, Cheri (Lyle) Calvin of Allen, Mary Sue “Cookie” Handy of Battle Creek; five sons, Nelson (Marjorie) Handy of Hudson, David (Sandy) Handy of Rollin, Terry (Sue) Handy, Phillip (Georgia) Handy and Patric (Kathy) Handy, all of Quincy; three brothers, Norman (Jean) Vanderpool of Jasper, Bruce Vanderpool of Adrian and Elwin Vanderpool of Grayling; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Vanderpool of Montgomery and Ethel Vanderpool of Hudson; 26 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, daughter, Judy; two grandsons, Jeremiah Handy and Justin Brott; one great-grandson, Michael Williams; three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with the Rev. Don Harkey officiating. Interment will follow in Fairfield Cemetery, Lenawee County, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
