The Independent Patriot
Lamoni, Iowa
February 7, 1895
At her late residence in Lamoni, January 23, 1895, Mrs. Jane REID ELDER, from sciatic rheumatism combined with other complications. She was of English descent, born June 9, 1821 and was 83 years, 7 months and (unreadable) was the
mother of five daughters, three of whom are yet living, Ann HANEY residing in northwest Nebraska; Melissa B. WOODS, Emma Cecilia SEAWORTH both of whom reside in Lamoni. The funeral service was in charge of Elder J. D. BENNETT, assisted by J. W. WIGHT, R. M. ELVIN pronouncing the funeral discourse, from 1 Cor. 15: 22-3. She was laid away during a furious blizzard, but that did not disturb her rest.
"At Rest", O sweet inspiring though,
There's rest within the tomb;
For weary feet, and hands that wrought,
With toil and suffering here.
As season there our clay may rest;
Or mingle with the dust,
Until the angel trumpet blast
Shall call the spirit back.
But higher still, a hope inspires,
That we shall rise again,
To dwell with those who ne'er shall tire;
Nor racked with cruel pain.
Our bodies then renewed shall be,
Forever to remain;
Like him whose face we then shall see,
So perfect and divine.
