I am told by Margaret Handford, authority on the Handford family of England, that Handford simply means 'way across' implying a place where small animals may cross a stream or river. The name was first used in England before 1190 in Cheshire. Honforths were possessed of the Manor Honforth cum Bosden, now Handforth, Cheshire, UK. This lineage is established to before 1190. I am a lineal descendant of the Handforde merchant tailors of London and have that line to the 14th c. The London (merchant) Hanfords were using the arms of Honforth of Cheshire. I have not fount the link to Cheshire however. Bill Hansford, M.D.
