Merrill B. Hanning was in the Civil War 15th Maine Regiment, Company E. He was first listed as a corporal, then in April, 1865 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.....He was discharged for disability in 1866

There are hannings listed in the 1851 Census of Houlton, Maine (Aroostook County)....The Census in online and searchable..
