This was my first look at the Hanselman family messageboard. I was delighted to find your notices on David Hanselman, my great-grandfather. His third wife, Frances Elizabeth Ayers (b. 8-25-1858), was my great-grandmother. They had two daughters: Dorothy and Frances Virginia, my grandmother. David, Frances, and Dorothy all died within a year after my grandmother was newly married (probable cancer, pernicious anemia, and the great influenza epidemic, respectively). I have heartbreaking copies of letters written by my grandmother during the last months of their lives.

My dad said he once came home from school, telling his mother (Frances, who survived) that their teacher taught them slaves were never abused by their masters. His mother corrected him, saying, "Your grandfather David witnessed their being whipped and heard their cries while he served on a riverboat on the Mississippi."

David Hanselman was a slender, dignified man with penetrating eyes, very dark hair, and a long beard. I have visited his grave in Burrton, Kansas, where my grandmother Frances, her husband, and children left flowers faithfully every year on "Decoration Day," as they called it (Memorial Day).

Since genealogy is more than just names and dates of our ancestors, I hope you will find this information as fascinating as I did!
