The name is also spelled Herbert and other variations[think of British pronunciation derby is pronounced "darby"].I don't have a precise answer for you, but can point you to a few other websites that have a great deal of information. It looks as though the origin is Wales, although some of the family branced out into England & Ireland. See message 421 at the Herbert family genealogy forum, posted by Randi - she is a professional genealogist discussing the Irish branch, and their Welsh roots; see also http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/HERBERT2.htmhttp://www.tudorplace.com.ar/HERBERT2.htm, www.spaldinggenealogy.com I'm tracing the Herberts of Maryland also.See my post at message number 1367 on the Herbert Family Genealogy Forum website which starts with William Herbert - likely b. 1640-1660 range and d. abt 1720 in St. Mary's co. Md.
